You should absolutely do commissions if you are willing to, and have the time!
If I were in your shoes, I would focus on 'practicing' art ('cubes in perspective', etc.), rather than on dealing with people's wishes. Try to work with gray scales and stuff like that. (The equivalent to using only a pencil.)
And go to the Art Forum for some better advice than mine - from your more experienced peers.
